Jira: Next-Gen Projects & Classic Projects Update

Team Projects

The next projects you will create in Jira will be done from a new template library. In the new template library, you can browse a variety of different templates across all your owned Jira products. This update is about you being successful for your next Jira project. According to Atlassian, nothing is fundamentally changing within the templates themselves. It is where you will find information and best practices about each template to help you select the optimal template for your next project. Their goal is to avoid the problem where you start in one template and later realize you need to start over in another template better suited to your needs.

Since the launch of Next-Gen last October of 2018, the name was found confusing. The team took this matter to the board and decided to rename Next-Gen and Classic. They wanted the new names to be clearer and more descriptive of the type of project. The new names of the projects are:

Next-Gen Projects to Team-Managed Projects

The functionality of the project will remain the same. It will still be the type of project independent teams would find ideal. Most of these independent teams want to control their own working processes. They also prefer to practice in a self-contained space.

Classic Projects to Company-Managed Projects

The Jira admins will set up and maintain this type of project. It will remain the best option for those teams who want to work with other teams across many projects. Teams sharing a workflow is an example of this.

The team has carefully chosen new names that are descriptive and for the long-term vision for Jira. They are working for the goal where the only difference between Team-Managed and Company-Managed projects will be how they will be carried out.

The team recognizes that there is value in both project types. They also see customers achieve great success in both. The team will continue to innovate and bring new features to both project types. As Jira continues to grow, new templates will be added across all types of departments and teams.
